1.blend  v．混合，混杂
【例】The glorious afterglow seems to blend earth and heaven。
这灿烂的晚霞似乎将天地融为一体。

2.furnish  v．供应，提供；为…配备家具
【记】联想记忆：fur(皮毛)+nish--用皮毛提供装备--提供
【例】This spacious room is sparsely furnished with just a few articles in it．
这间宽敞的房间里只稀疏地配备了几件家具。

3.backward  adj.向后的；落后的，不发达的；迟钝的
【记】联想记忆：back(后面的)+ward(向…)--向后的
【例】No human race anywhere on earth is so backward that it has no language of its own at all.
没有任何一个人类种族还如此落后，连自己的语言都没有。(2000)

4.possess   vt.拥有；（感情或思想等）控制（某人）；掌握（技能）
【例】The applicant didn't possess the necessary skills to do the job well.
该申请者不具备做好这项工作所必需的技能。
【派】possession（n．拥有，所有权；所有物；自制）
【辨】possess, own两个词都有“拥有”的意思。possess强调拥有某种品质或掌握某种技能，比较正式，如：possess courage; own比较通俗，多指拥有某种财产，可指长期占有，如：own a house。

5.capture  vt.捕获;夺得，占领；赢得；引起（注意） n．捕获；俘虏，战利品，缴获品
【记】词根记忆：capt(抓)+ure(表名词)--抓住的东西--俘虏
【例】The three men tried many times to sneak across the border into the neighboring country, only to be captured by the police each time.

The penalty for these captured aid workers could range from expulsion to a jail term，and death sentence.

6.focus  n．焦点，聚焦；中心，集中点 v.聚焦，集中；调节…的焦距
【例】Focusing your energy on talking care of yourself with proper exercise the best way to not just transform body but to lift your spirits.
集中精力照顾自己并做适当的锻炼是修塑型、陶冶情操的最好方式。(2002)
【用】与focus有关的固定搭配有focus on或focus sth. on。

7.conscientious   adj.审慎正直的；本着良心的；认真的
【记】词根记忆：con+sci(知道)+ent+ious(多…的)--懂得多的--审慎正直的
【例】John did his work far from conscientious.
约翰做事很不认真。
【派】conscientiously(adv.认真地，诚心诚意地)
【辨】conscientious, conscious这两个词是形近词，意思大不相同，conscientious意为“尽责的，认真的”；conscious意为“有意识的，自觉的”，要区分开。

8.recognizable  adj.可识别出的；可承认的
【记】词根记忆：re+cogn(知道)+izable--被知道的--可识别出的
【例】Hundreds of surnames are familiar to us, or at least recognizable after a little thought.
我们对数百个姓氏都很熟悉，或至少在沉思片刻后可以认出。(2000)
