1.legitimate   vt．使合法 adj.台法的，法律认可的；合乎逻辑的
【记】词根记忆：leg(法律)+itim+ate--使合法
【例】The government tried to legitimate casinos in their country.
该国政府试图使赌场在国内合法化。

2.slant  v．倾斜；有倾向性地报道 n．斜线，斜面，斜坡；观点，意见，偏见
【例】The whole book is slanted and gender-biased.
整本书都存有性别歧视。
Tim ran along a slant towards the top of the hill.
提姆沿着斜坡向山顶跑去。

3.inward  adj.在内的，里面的；内（心）的，精神上的 adv.向内，向中心
【记】词根记忆：in(进入)+ward(方向)--进入里面--在内的
【例】I realized the inward change after the accident.
这次事故使我的内心发生了变化。

3.kneel  vi．跪下，跪着
【例】They knelt solemnly in the church and prayed in silence.
他们庄严地跪在教堂里默默祈祷。

4.deflect  v.（使）偏斜，转向
【记】词根记忆：de(离开)+flect(弯曲)--弯到旁边--转向
【例】The missile deflected from its trajectory.
导弹偏离了自己的轨道。
【用】deflect常与介词from搭配，表示“从…倾斜”。

5.choke   v.（使）窒息，噎住；使塞住不通；抑割；使不能出声
【例】The fumes in the house almost choked me.
屋里的烟雾几乎把我呛死了。
【用】choke常见搭配：①choke back（忍住，抑制）；②choke off（抑制，劝阻）；③choke up（哽咽，噎住；阻塞）。

6.leap  n./v.跳，跳跃；（数字等）激增
【例】Many cities in the US grew by leaps through the 20th century.
美国很多城市都在20世纪得到了快速发展。

7.starve   v．（使）饿，（使）饿死；感觉很饿
【例】That a man can do so and not starve is nowadays not even a paradox.
现在看来，一个人只要这样做便不会饿死的说法有些自相矛盾。
【派】starvation（n.饥饿，饿死）

8.stumble  v.绊脚，绊跌；蹒跚而行，行动不稳：结结巴巴地说
【例】Anthony drunkenly stumbled about, trying to go out of the room.
安东尼醉醺醺地、跌跌撞撞地想要走出房间。
Police investigating tax fraud stumbled across a drugs ring.
警方在调查逃税案件时意外地发现了一个贩毒集团。
【用】stumble across/on sb./sth.表示“意外地或偶然地发现某人或某事物”
