1.exert  vt．运用，行使，发挥(影响等);用力，尽力

【例】exert oneself Married couples are likely to exert themselves for guests-being amusing, discussing with passion and point-and then to fall into dull exhausted silence when the guests have gone.

2.invert  vt.倒置，颠倒

【例】Should the image formed on the retina be inverted?

3.apparent  adj.明显的，显而易见的；外表的，表面上的
【记】联想记忆：ap(表加强)+parent(父母)--父母对儿女的爱显而易见--明显的
【例】In the Philippines a ferry carrying at least 400 people has sunk after an apparent collision with a cargo ship.

4.courteous  adj.有礼貌的，谦恭的

6.brilliant  adj.光辉的，辉煌的；卓越的；聪颖的

【辨】 brilliant, clever, smart这三个词都有“聪明的”之意。brilliant褒义色彩最浓，指非常聪明，才华横溢；clever指理解快的、思维灵活的；smart指机敏、反应快而不同凡响的。

7.shorten   v．（使）变短，缩短
【例】Smoking and drinking a lot will shorten the life.
抽烟和酗酒会缩短人的寿命。

8.affirm   v．坚称，断言，肯定地说

【例】Tom affirmed that he didn't cheat during the examination.
汤姆坚持表示自己考试没有作弊。
